2009...The Year of the Swine....flu, that is!

I’ll admit, I tend not to worry about things until they directly affect me. So when this whole swine flu thing came about, my reaction was: “Wow that’s scary” Pray for those affected. Shrug it off. Go back to living my life.

Well tonight, roughly three hours ago, my dad, my sister, her boyfriend, and I sat down for a nice dinner. We had the local radio on in the background and just as we’re getting up to clear our plates we hear this:

Breaking News: All schools in the New Braunfels and Comal district will be closed for the next 10 days due to reports of the swine flu.

Woah! I had planned to call my Kids Club director to let her know that I wasn’t sure when I’d be coming back. But instead, I called her to let her know that I won’t be missing anything because now Kids Club will be closed for the next 10 days. So far, no big shockers. There had been one reported case in our district so I suppose only that school needed to be shut down, but I guess they figured it’d be easier, or safer, to shut down the entire district. Ok. Cool. Whatever. So I go back to what I’m doing…get on Facebook and all down my status page was different reports of things in town being shut down/cancelled/postponed etc. Then the mayor orders that all daycare and children’s activities are shut down for the next ten days as well! Up next….Wein and Saengerfest…our town’s big summer kickoff festival….CANCELLED! WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO US???

So now all schools are cancelled, all kids sports and afterschool activities are cancelled, and we’re urged not to gather in groups of more than 20, including church! What? Oh and not to mention, my nephew was planning a birthday party next weekend and now probably can’t have it! Not cool! He actually told his mother “It’s ok if no one comes to my party.” Ouch!

Our town has literally shut down within hours with just 1 reported case….while a neighboring town has had three reported cases as well as almost 30 possible cases…yet they haven’t even closed their schools!

I understand the need to play it safe, but I think our mayor needs to take just a few more breaths before he starts taking actions like this! Seriously!

In other news: Dallas is whooping the Spurs! 94-84 w/ 4:20 in the game! :(

Now back to our regularly scheduled freakout with this gem from my brother: “Facebook will now be shut down for two weeks due to the swine flu” Hehe….I love that guy :p

In church this morning we talked about the Ten Commandments & our pastor asked us to shout them out as he listed them on the board. He abbreviated instead of writing them all out so our list looked like this at the end….

1. Love God
2. Steal
3. Kill
4. Lie
5. Adultery

…etc

It was funny because at the end of the discussion he looked at the board & said….”now don’t read this as it’s written! Look at this as all the things you shouldn’t do” & someone goes “So we shouldn’t Love God?” Hehehe…too funny!

Stats Suck Sunday

- Church was amazing this morning! We’re doing a Bible Study on The Shack in Sunday School class & today’s discussions were tough, but very inspiring!

- Today is Compassion Sunday. Pray for all the children waiting for sponsors to find them as a result!

- Missing Phil Wickham tonight :(

- I’m going to put on my own Phil Wickham concert tonight :p May actually get a concert call as well!

- Free Fallin’ is amazing! Every time I play it, I picture myself driving on an open road with my hands way up in the air! (Ok so I’m not the one driving I guess….I’d have to be the passenger to have my hands way up in the air :p)

- Sonic vanilla sprite rocks!

- My baby sister went to her prom last night! Am I really that old?

- My 10 year high school reunion is this year, so that would be a yes.

- The Spurs NEED to win the last three games of the series! Yikes!

- Rhapsody shuffle is mean! It’s playing Phil Wickham literally every other song & Phil covers only about 1/8 of my playlist!

- I’ve had the BIGGEST moth in my room for days! Had no clue how to get rid of it. Finally, it flew straight into my trashcan so all I had to do was take it out and set it free! And I actually used the phrase “Fly away Stanley, be free” to coax it out of the trashcan! :p

- This one’s for you Brody….CUPCAKES ROCK!!!! :p

You can listen to a song a million times and never really hear it. If it hadn’t been for church last week I probably would’ve done that with this song! During our service, Phillip started singing this song and his voice alone was just beautiful…but to hear the words, and really LISTEN to them…I was blown away & brought to tears! I guarantee if you do the same, you’ll be brought to tears too!

I get them all the time. Shameless friend requests from bands trying to get me to listen to their music. Half the time, they’re not even the type of music i like! And I like most types of music! :p And most of the time, I hate to say, they’re not that good.

However….every once in a while I feel a little nudge from God telling me to give someone a chance. Last time I felt that nudge, I found Seventh Time Down. They are a Christian Rock band from Kentucky and they ROCK! :) So much, in fact, that I’ve been working my butt off trying to get them booked at my church or ANY local church. It MUST happen! They’re currently working on a new album. I will be sure and let everyone know when it’s out!

My computer has turned on me!

It all started as a little problem of not being able to view embedded videos on blogs. Well last night I decided to take the plunge & get rid of iTunes, thinking all my computer issues were from lack of space. Tried to uninstall & got a message saying I had to have some special disk to uninstall…ummmm no!? Restarted computer & iTunes was gone…but an uninstall window kept popping up, asking me to insert this disk. What disk??? Ugh! So then I decided to ignore that & try downloading Firefox to see if the video issue was a browser specific issue. Videos work beautifully on Firefox, so I figured “Hey, maybe if I update to the latest version of IE that will fix it.” WRONG!!! I downloaded IE8 & now every time I open the internet, this window pops up asking me to change my desired search program….I tried, but it doesn’t work! So I decide to forget about all that & just download TweetDeck & at least get that under control. Downloaded TweetDeck & the program is TOTALLY BLANK!!!! AHHHHHHHH!!!!

In church this morning our pastor read an excerpt from Peter Rollins’ blog that just about gave half the congregation a heart attack, that is, until he got to the end…so take a deep breath & read on…

Recently I made a $200 payment on my credit card. Payment didn’t go through right away…

Days later, I noticed it still hadn’t gone through. Enter…life….

Things got crazy & money was spent here, there, and everywhere…

I checked my bank account on Thursday….overdrawn! Eek! What pushed me over the edge? A $200 payment to my credit card (which is from the same bank…..keep in mind because it’s crucial to the rest of the story)….

Now why would the bank let me make a $200 payment to their own credit card when they know I’ll be overdrawn when they do? Strange…..

Well here’s the best part….

They put a $100 overdraft charge on my credit card so that I wouldn’t be charged for going over on my checking account….huh?

So basically….I make a $200 payment toward my credit card….overdraw my bank account….and get charged $100 on my credit card to save the bank account!

That’s special!

It’s that time again….time for Third Day on the 3rd Day!

I LOVE Twitter. I’m definitely addicted! I see two sides to Twitter. On one hand, it’s a tool for anyone to use to keep in touch with their friends & family around the world. On the other hand, it’s a tool for bands to use to keep their fans up to date & even chat with them every now and then. Recently, the guys of MercyMe started what I thought was THE COOLEST use for Twitter EVER! They started what they call Tweet & Greets. Basically, they Tweet from somewhere (a restaurant, shop, street corner, etc) during their time off while on tour & anyone can go running and meet up with them. Now all of SkorInc’s artists are doing it. How freakin’ cool is that, right?

Well Saturday I discovered a pretty darn rock & roll use for Twitter! I collect guitar picks. Not just ANY guitar picks though….used guitar picks ;) That is, used guitar picks from my favorite musicians! I don’t have very many so far.

I got my first one at my brother’s gig. I know, sounds totally biased, but it was thrown from the stage in the middle of the show & definitely not meant for me, so it’s totally legit!

The second one, I got from Jeremy Holderfield (Seventh Day Slumber’s lead guitarist). I was in the very front right in front of him. I’d just answered their altar call and was sitting there in tears cheering for their show & Jeremy called over a security guard & asked him to hand it to me. So sweet!

The third one, a Mac Powell pick, I simply won in a contest. Not as rock and roll as catching it from the stage but it was, in fact, a USED pick, so it worked for me! :)

Saturday, I went to see Third Day at Sea World. It was a general admission show & they had handicap seats right up front. We got in line 3 hours before showtime just to get those seats & we did. Claimed our spots over on Mark’s side. Just before showtime, we realize that we’re allowed to be AT the stage. So we rushed up to the stage & I settled in right in front of Mark’s microphone in hopes that he would toss one my way. I joked that I should Twitter him & tell him to toss me one. Now if you know Mark you know he’s HIGHLY popular on Twitter and he follows everyone who follows him, so I knew that if I had Twittered it the chances of him even seeing it were slim to none! But everyone told me to do it, so I did…it went a little something like this….

I tweeted: @marklee3d Im right at the stage on your side. I need a Mark Lee pick! ;)

Not two minutes later I check & see this!: @kellygirl27 I’ll do my best, although my pick tosses are far from accurate :)

I tweet back with this: @marklee3d Hehe. I’m literally AT the stage so you can just hand it to me ;) My catches arent great either :p

After this exchange I was even more determined to get that pick, but part of me still didn’t expect it. I come from a family of musicians so I know what it’s like to put on a show. You get in the moment and forget everything outside the show for the time being. I can’t tell you how many times I requested my brother’s band do ONE song….the SAME song show after show, & they would STILL forget to do it! I just knew that Mark would be in the moment and start throwing out his picks and end up not having one for me. Not only that, but I’d only met him once. Would he remember who I am? What I look like? Doubt it! Well, about halfway through the show, he looked down at me and waved. But it wasn’t just any wave. It was a wave that said “I know you’re waiting….your pick is coming”. Got my hopes up a little bit after that. Then the show ended. Everyone started cheering and the picks started flying. Mark threw out pick, after pick, after pick. I thought “Ah well, no biggie…I’ll just ask him for one at the M&G afterwards”. Then Mark steps up to the edge of the stage, reaches out, and hands me his pick! :) Doesn’t get much more rock & roll than that! Or does it….

At the M&G, I gave Mark a huge hug for what he did & he said “Yeah I had just headed backstage when I got your tweet. I would’ve just come found you in the crowd & handed it to you.”

Ummmmmm….wow! Now THAT would’ve been rock & roll!

Either way, right after he handed me the pick, I tweeted “Got the pick!” and people responded to me in total shock that Mark had just handed it to me. All I could say was…

Tweet and ye shall receive! :)

Oh and speaking of Twitter, all the guys now have their own accounts! David has yet to start Tweeting but it’s only a matter of time before he gives in ;)
