Injustice

I’ve seen it a lot lately. People who don’t give anything, but get everything. Then people who give everything don’t get anything, or get very little. I saw this last night at my sister’s winterguard competition. My sister is incredible. When she moves, you don’t want to blink or even breathe cause you’re afraid you’ll miss something. She has the biggest heart for what she does. Sure, every now and then it gets hard and she gets discouraged…she’s not perfect! But I’ve never seen someone with more passion for something than she has for colorguard! She performed in her last state competition (she’s a senior) last night. She did so beautifully that her guard instructor who never cries, teared up. He was blown away. He told her (and me) that it was the most beautiful performance he’d ever seen from anyone! Even her friends & competitors were blown away. The judges must’ve been staring at the wall behind her or something because they apparently felt differently. You see all levels of expertise here. People who you just know were born to do this down to people who shouldn’t be doing it at all! Last night, my sister was beat out by one of those people! I hate to sound harsh, but this girl had all the energy & creativity in the world…but she had zero skill! She tried to do all sorts of things you wouldn’t think you could do with a colorguard rifle, but the thing is, she couldn’t do half of them either! Don’t know if she just got points for trying or what, but it KILLED me to hear her name called in 2nd place over my sister! Then came the first place winner. She was really good! She definitely deserved to place. But to know what I know about her, it hurt to see her place over my sister. She has all the skill, but none of the passion or drive. My sister is always talking about how she has her parents do things for her. Of course, they can’t go out and perform for her so I know she did that on her own and did it well. But just knowing there’s nothing behind it, when you have my sister who puts EVERYTHING she has behind it….it’s hard, it’s painful! I’m not trying to sound whiny and conceited like I’m saying, “My sister’s the best! She should be first!” But last night, out of all the performers (and especially the top three) she WAS the best! But the show goes on, and my sister will be travelling across the country this summer, performing with the Crossmen team at DCI! If that’s not an honor, I don’t know what is! :)
